The Skies The Limit With Decorating
The three major rules of thumb, are...
  1. Plan your entire project, but be open to changes as the project unfolds.

  2. Prepare all surfaces and areas properly. Don't skip a step to save time and money. The step you skip, may just cost you more. I have learned first hand from trying to rush and get the project done.

  3. Take your time when you are in the process of doing the project. You may or may not be on a deadline, but it is the quality of work that will result in a happy you at the end.
This web site is a simple and real web site of some basic ideas for you to do in everyday decorating. When you are in the planning phase of starting from scratch or doing a make over, think about every aspect of the room. Here are some tips to think about for this year 2009, or any year in the future. You can also think about organizing your interior space, for 2010 and beyond.

Budget may be one, if not the most important factor. Plan your project around your budget, and consider even doing the project or projects in phases. I don't know about you, but I am not one that likes to do things in phases. Once I get rolling on a interior project, I want to results! I remember years ago in our house up in Rochester, New York. I was so tired of our kitchen floor. One day I just got fed up with it and took a crowbar and pulled the entire floor up. It not only made a mess, but when my husband got home from work, sparks began to fly.

Have you ever done anything like this in a room or living space? Being a designer, sometimes I get into a creative mode, but that creativity results in living on subflooring until the budget allows you to get new floor. After several months, we installed beautiful Elm Wood floors. A lesson to be learned!

Besides budget, knowing the basic colors, and understanding what tones and shades compliment each other. Trends will be set for 2009 and beyond, but it is what you like and how you and your family will feel comfortable in your living space that is important. The trends of today are actually about taking your own personality and creating rooms that are affordable and exciting for you.

One of the keys in decorating is to decide what style you want for your living space. Is wood furniture and accessories your priority for the look you want to achieve? If it is, there is so many different possibilities. Many companies provide a wide range of projects that you can decorate in all oak, all pine, or a combination of different hard and soft woods.

Are you trying to get a tropical look, nature, whimsical, or a combination of both? Don't be afraid to get creative with doing combinations. You can have an entire living area with one base theme and color family, or go a little step beyond, and create each room with its own personality. This is personally the type of decorating I like to do. Each room represents a little bit of you and what you like. So, what is the bottom line of decorating in 2009 - 2010 and beyond? Here are a few suggestions as you begin to plan for your indoor or outdoor projects in 2009.

  1. Go with your budget and your own personality.

  2. Decide on your colors ahead of time and consider doing in phases. I am learning how to do phase decorate.

  3. Research the options you have on companies that provide paint, wallpaper, furniture and accessories. Plan your budget around the different items that mean the most to you.

  4. Take the time to learn about the basic differences in matching color tones and complimentary colors. This is so important when you are deciding on your base foundation paint or wall paper for a room. Using the main color and blending it in with accent colors will create a wonderful environment for you and your family or in a work place.

  5. If the project is one that you don't want to tackle yourself, hire a professional, but get two or three estimates before you decide. Make sure that professional has your best interest in mind. When I was on consultations for designing interiors, one of my goals was to put my mindset into the clients. Listening to their needs and what they think their room or rooms should look like. It may not be my taste in decorating, but what I could offer them in suggestions that would reflect their own personality.
Designing and decorating your living space should be fun and exciting. There are some projects you will entail this year that may seem gruesome, such as ripping out carpet or a floor. Don't think in the terms of regretting, but think in the terms of the final result, a new and exciting look for you.

This web site will continue to grow by taking simple ideas and creating a variety of decorating ideas for you. 2009 - 2010 may be a tough year financially for many of us, but following some basic rules in decorating both inside and out, can allow you to move forward into making your living space a happy and fun environment for you, your family and friends.

I look forward to working together in making a good investment year for your home, apartment, condo, beach house, camp, dorm room, or other living spaces. Go with the colors you love, go with a theme you treasure, and make your room or rooms ones that will last in creating memories!
