New decor for plate shelves?
by Debbie

Hi-
My kitchen has narrow shelves above the cabinets in the kitchen. Since we moved in 10 years ago, I've had the same baskets, bunnies and little primitive buildings up there. I want to replace this stuff with something more up-to-date, but I have NO idea what that would be. The house is a rustic salt-box cottage style in a woodsy lake setting. What's in style these days?
Thanks so much for any input!!
Hi, Kimberly here from interior-decorating-ideas-for-you. Thanks for asking the question and a great question.
In today are country decor and simple accessories. One of the things I personally like to do is see what other decor and color scheme I have in different rooms. Think about changing out different accessories from other rooms first to create a new look on your shelves.
Plate shelves can be done with a specific theme such as totally country, french country, old plates, and nature. If you have the option of using other decor, here are some suggestions.
If that doesn't please you, consider giving your kitchen and shelves a specific theme look. The rustic and salt box style cottage is very popular today. Old picture frames with a few pictures. A few books on the shelves with a couple of candles and holders.
Bring in some color trinkets and items that will compliment your colors in the kitchen. Use a specific theme of nature and natural items. I even will throw in a couple of stuffed animals if they fit the theme.
You can also go into a different direction by doing hand crafted items. Take it into a new direction by giving the feeling of the four seasons and nature. Nature is also a hot theme for design in 2011, and will be in 2012.
I would go with your favorite colors, concentrate on either a specific theme or create a combination of different themes with candles, books, figurines, dried flower arrangements, and photos.

I hope this helps and if you need some more suggestions, let all of us know. Thanks again for asking the question and feel free to ask anytime.
