A Quilt Can Create A Special Room For You Or A Guest

A Quilt can create a great accent, that may have special meaning to many of us. Do you have that special comforter that a relative made for you, or you couldn't resist years ago being somewhere and you saw the most beautiful homemade blanket you had ever seen?

Is this special item stored away as you aren't quite sure what to do with it. This has happened to me a couple of time over the years. These blankets come in many different styles from unique sewing of squares or other shapes, to telling a story. Decorating trends have changed over the years but you can take the colors of the seventies or eighties and create your own living space with a special item or two.

Below are three pictures of a quilt that was made for Tom and I for our wedding back in the 70's. My aunt Ida from up in the Adirondack Mountains made this for us. The pictures may be hard to depict the actual colors in the blanket, but mauve was the border color. There were many other colors that were used in the paint, which makes it fun to think about doing a foundation and complimentary tones with this special blanket.

I wanted to share with you some simple ideas of using some different colors to create a room with this blanket being the focal point. This may help you if you are considering doing a room with that one or two special item you may have sitting around.

Quilt Tells A Story
This quilt tells a story and has so many unique characters throughout the entire blanket. The background was a white in the 70's but has since faded. There are basic primary colors of blue, green, red, and yellow, as well as secondary colors of teal, pink tones and others. Here are a couple of options to consider when having this many colors to choose from.

One of the first thoughts is having the room blend with other surrounding rooms. Also, your floor and furniture and balancing all the tones so it blends well in the room. I like the idea of creating this room in a warm and airy feeling. The quilt has meaning to Tom and I, so giving the foundation a warm tone in paint would work nicely. An off white or a soft neutral, would accent this quilt wonderfully. Lets look at a close up of one of set of figures.

Close Up Of Set Of Figures
As you can see from one of the set of figures there are a lot of different color tones. I also like to potentially use this blanket in a guest room or maybe a child's room. The guest room would look nice done in the soft neutral tone. A child's room could have one of the child's favorite colors to use as the foundation or wall paint. Remember though, if using this in a bedroom, keep the tones down as the bedroom is a place for relaxing and down time.

A play room could easily have a brighter tone. Consider green, blue, yellow, or even purple tones. A key is finding a good foundation color and blending that foundation color with matching accent colors. Make the room inviting not only for that person or persons, but also for the rest of your living space.

Accent For Quilt
The final picture is a piece of furniture my dad made for us years ago. This piece of furniture would be a great accent with your special quilt. The theme all tones all blend in together. The soft oak in the wood accents the quilt well. The green cushions blend great with a good secondary color of green that you see in the trees and figures.

The decorative scarf adds a little new dimension to the room, but the colors still blend with the overall look and feel. The teddy bear has tones also that match the blanket and scarf. An added bonus is the light oak floors that give that airy and warm look to the bottom part of the room. It is important that you look at matching wood tones and grains with other colors. This also goes if you use carpet and other fabrics for curtains and other accessories.

Ah, one special quilt, one room, a couple of creative ideas using your own personality can turn this particular room into a place to relax, have fun, and enjoy. I hope this page gives you some ideas to think about if you have that special blanket or other item packed away or just laying around collecting dust. As you get to know me, I love taking things already around the house and creating a new look or give a room a little different feel, even if its just for awhile. Special items have great memories, but also give others new memories for years to come.
