Senior citizen interior decorating can make your memories come to life. So many people
as they grow older have collected an enormous amount of pictures, collectables, and many
other items. Sometimes I think way too many boxes of old things, but to me, I just can't seem
to throw away the different eras.
The main aspect of decorating a room or rooms when you get older is
to think simple. Here a couple of ideas that may help you get started, or if you are thinking about
changing the look and feel of your home, apartment, or other living space.
The most important thing to think about is comfort. Make the colors and textures enjoyable. There are some
factors to consider with senior citizens. Some may live alone, others married for years, and others recently
remarried or happy to have a companion
It doesn't matter what your situation is,
simple and comfortable should
be your ultimate goal. I am in my 50's now and I look at my dad who is in his 80's. He has remarried after my mom
passed away in 2000, and also settled down for a more simplistic approach to not only decorating, but life in general.
Ah, I know many of you can relate to that. Some of you that may reading this may be my age and wondering how you
can help your parents out with their decorating needs. Here are a few suggestions to think about, whether you
are a senior citizen or your parents are at this stage in their lives.
- If you can paint your walls or have someone paint them, pick a color that is cheerful. A warm
color or neutral color will work well. If your walls are paneled, brighten up the paneling with light colored
picture frames or shelves you can put your collectables on.
- Continue the interior decorating philosophy of today by "doing your own thing." Make items easy accessible to
you. This goes for any room.
- Identify a special space for you to read, play card games, or whatever your relaxation may be.
- You may have collected cards, pictures, and other special items for years. Create a collage or have some one
help you with a scrapbook. Consider putting any of these items in larger frames to hang of the wall.
- If you have older furniture that reflects different times in your life and also very comfortable, make that a focal
point so you can enjoy it. You have worked hard and brought up your family, now is the time to take all those memories as
a senior citizen and be proud of.
- As we all know when we get on in our years we tend to forget. Create a bulletin board or a place you can write messages on.
Place this item in an area that can be seen.
- This time in your life should be one that reflects the hard times and happy times. Your interior whether it is a small living space
or sprawled out, should be one you and your family and friends can enjoy. Grandchildren and great grand children love to visit. Make
them feel comfortable with possibly having their own little space of identity. If they are small, have an area for them to play, read, or
put their art work out to display. A little table or small sitting area is a great idea.
- As a senior citizen go ahead an display that special afghan
or throw blanket. Tell your stories to family and friends through accents and accessories in your living space.
- Go ahead and have a theme in your living space or a certain area. You have created memories through the years, display those war metals, sports collectables,
old newspapers and articles. This is a wonderful way in your interior to teach the younger generation as well as keeping the family unit in tack.
- If you want to go bold in color through your walls, accents or accessories, by all means do. In interior decorating we speak of keeping a room
balanced. Your main goal again is simplicity and comfort. If you need more lights in a room to see, do it. Night lights are popular, but also
consider a few accent lights to create the mood of your room or past memories. You as senior citizens are a wonderful and unique part of our society,
create your interior that reflects you and your past, but also the future.

will give you some easy ideas to enjoy your outdoors as well. I truly like the idea of decorating for senior citizens to create an atmosphere
where number one, you can relax and enjoy, and two, where your family and friends can gather to laugh, even cry, but to feel comfortable. The bottom
line when decorating your living space, go ahead and be yourself. If you want to put plaids and stripes together or create a living space full of pastel
colors, go ahead and do it. Simple and comfortable for all you senior citizens is what your main objective should be. It won't be too many more years
before I enter the senior citizen stage, and I plan on decorating Tom and my living space with each of our own personalities. There is no
complicated ideas here, just take your own memories and bring them to life for you, and your family and friends.
