A shelf makeover can create a great new look. If you have read some of the pages on this site you know that I love to spontaneously do a small interior decorating project.

I was rearranging some old pictures and wanted to create a new look to the dining room. The photos were arranged on an old sewing machine and I wanted to tidy up the area a little bit. I went out in the garage and in a box of old things, there was a shelf I have had for years.

I want to share with you a very simple project you can do to add a little spice to a room. The cost of this project is two spray cans of paint I had sitting out in the garage. Time wise, allowing the paint to dry. Easy and inexpensive project for you to do.

I put newspaper on the garage floor but also near the door so there was plenty of good ventilation. I started out by spraying the entire shelf black. Once it began to dry, I felt the black was too much for the room. I found a can of burnt orange spray paint and decided to accent the black with the burnt orange. The burnt orange is a combination of orange and brown tones in the paint.

This color creates enough contract with the bold yet fun, cayenne colored walls. If you look closely you can see it is only sprayed in small areas. This creates a great blend of color and balance to the walls. The black offsets the walls and the burnt orange compliments the cayenne color. I did recheck the blend of paint colors once it was dry to see if I wanted to add a little more orange tone to it.

Here is a photo when finished and hung. Tom mounted the shelf with some anchors to support the weight and the pictures. I kept the picture on the wall I had above the sewing machine. The color of the wind chime blends in the the photos and frames. Each frame on the shelf is pewter or silver tone, and creates the old time look and feel.

If you look at the total of number of items on the shelf, you will see five items hung above, and nine on the newly painted accessory. Remember, decorate with odd numbers. The sewing machine now has old time gold tone candle holders in a series of five, a few more pictures, and a couple of other old items. There is a full length white lace table cloth that fit perfectly over the sewing machine.

This is a very simple project you can do with any existing accessory. If you have boxes of items stored somewhere, go ahead a dig through and get those creative juices flowing. Spray paint is an inexpensive way to create a great new look with an accessory in a room. Below are some pictures of different collectable items and shelves.

The first picture is a simple display of a couple of small shelves. The wallpaper in the background compliments the color in the collectable and trinket items. A nice accent in any room.

I love the second picture with the brick wall and rustic or vintage look. Five items across and two hanging balance this area out. The dark tones and softer tone items blends well together.

The next three photos represent totally a totally different look.

The first picture display color and brightness. The entire piece is full of character and can represent different colors you can use throughout a room.

The second picture creates a natural and neutral look. Darker wood tones create a masculine or bold feeling. The warm tone curtain balances this interior area.

The third photo is a very simple decor. The red accents the wood and creates a wonderful look in any room. The wine or red tone glasses gives you the option of different color accents and accessories in the room. A soft neutral wall would do great in this setting.
