Simple Ideas For Arranging Furniture

Simple ideas for arranging furniture is important for balance of the overall look and feel of a room. Furniture plays a big role in interior decorating, as it is not just matching colors and tones.

Have you ever tried to arrange or rearrange your furniture and you have too many large pieces, or your not sure where to put certain items? Taking each piece of furniture and placing in a position that will create an overall comfort level and also an enjoyable atmosphere.

There are some basic guidelines to follow when placing furniture in any type of room. Below are three simple diagrams of a living room or den, dining room, and a bedroom.

Livingroom
The first layout is of a living room or an area you like to go and relax, listen to some music, or watch TV. Remember, this is just one simple suggestion for some basic furniture. Notice how the pictures are placed above the couch. They aren't in a straight row.

Hanging simple pictures is a page on ideas on how to place your pictures on a wall. The TV in this layout is across the room for viewing not only from the couch, but also from the two accent chairs. The chairs are positioned so you can see the television from the left side of the room. Across from the chairs is a buffet or could also be a computer table, cabinet, or bookshelf. This larger piece of furniture will balance out the left and right sides of this room. Go ahead and add some end tables on either side of your couch. Of course you can add more pictures and other accessories if you have the space.

This is also a real simple color scheme of a darker teal tone, a couple of different shades of orange in the chairs, neutral color couch, stool or Ottoman, and a darker tone of wood furniture. A neutral or softer tone teal carpet would accent these colors nicely.

Diningroom
The second simple layout of a dining area. The amount of furniture will depend on the size of your room. I wanted to create a cheerful environment in this layout. The walls are done in a warm yellow tone. This creates a number of different possibilities in incorporating different colors with the yellow walls.

The table is the center or focal point of this room. A small chair placed between two windows is a great idea for a dining room. The stand or accent table with some plants under a window, is not only an eye catcher, but your plants will benefit from being close to the window. The pictures above the window represent more of a straight line. This can be done if space is tight, but notice how I put a smaller frame in the center to break up the straight line, and give it a little character.

The buffet or china cabinet is situated where it is not overpowering the room, but compliments the rest of the decor. A smaller round table, if room permits, creates a nice area for setting hot dishes on during dinner. A coffee pot and cups are wonderful on this table if you are entertaining. It is easy access after a wonderful meal. The other accent piece on the left hand side can be just about any piece furniture. This is where you can display your favorite photos, dishes, and other treasures.

Balance out the room with a couple of matching and decorative planters on either side of the round table. This also balances out your plants in the dining room. Notice the salmon color representing a table cloth. Another warm color that accents the yellow walls. This type of style room can have either lighter or darker wood furniture. White or even black table and chairs will work. Fabric on your chairs is an excellent idea for these color tones. Use floral, stripes, plaids or a solid tones. A simple and easy way to decorate a dining area.

Bedroom
The third layout is of simple bedroom furniture. I gave the walls a soft wallpaper look of light green and soft purples. The bed is situated where the solid darker purple comforter can be seen from all areas of the room. There are two dressers in the room and are across from each other. This is a great idea for balancing a bedroom.

The television is across from the bed, with a bean bag or other type of informal chair. This is great for reading or just vegging out with some music. The bean bag can be matched in the purple tones or the light green color. A hard wood floor or a soft colored carpet will give this bedroom a cozy and inviting feeling. The white dressers also keep the room cheerful and airy.

There are five pictures going across one entire wall. Notice how the pictures are staggered and balance that particular wall out. Of course you can add more photos on the other three walls. Don't overpower a room with photos, as the room begins to get a cluster feel to it. This basic room with just a couple of pieces of furniture, along with two of three colors can be done in a child's, guest, or adult room.

The above three are simple layouts to give you a few ideas on positioning furniture and using a few colors. Interior decorating takes a little bit of knowledge of color, basic design, and your willingness to become a little creative.

I love taking simple ideas and incorporating in a variety styles of living spaces.
